By plane:

Probably the easiest international way to travel to Kiel is via Hamburg airport (100km south of Kiel), and then via the Kielius bus, which runs every hour directly from Hamburg airport to Kiel's main railway station (95min trip). Time table information can be found here, and fares are posted here.

Several low cost carriers are operating at Lübeck airport, from where you can take the number 6 bus to Lübeck's central station, continuing by train from there.

By train:

Trains from Hamburg's central station to Kiel are running every hour (60-80min trip). Local trains also run from and to Denmark. Detailed information on train schedules and time tables can be found here.

By car:

Coming from Hamburg, take highway A215 to Kiel; coming from Denmark, take highway A210; and coming from Berlin or Lübeck, take highway A21.
